Many are saying, “Who will show us better times?”
Let your face smile on us, Lord.
You have given me greater joy
than those who have abundant harvests of grain and new wine. In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. (Psalm 4:6-8, NLT)

Fake News!

I have been trying my best lately not to get sucked into the black hole of news surrounding our country’s non-stop political mess.  I said I’ve been trying…but I haven’t been very successful! If you own a television, use a computer or listen to a radio on your way to work it’s impossible to stay away from the onslaught of disturbing news coming from our nation’s capital!

Here’s the problem—it’s all fake news!

HOLD ON! I’m not taking a political position by saying that. It doesn’t matter if you’re tuned in to FOX News or MSNBC.  It’s the same story if you visit the TownHall or MoveOn.org websites. It’s even a problem if you sit in front of C-SPAN and turn the volume off.  It’s all “fake” news.

Don’t misunderstand me, you might be hearing about things that are actually happening—and a lot of that news is as true as it is despicable.  There is no excuse for the kind of  corruption, deception, and exploitation that is being foisted upon us in the guise of public service and leadership. When you sit down in front of your favorite news source you will hear commentary and information that is genuinely insightful and helpful for navigating this unknown territory.  But in the end, they’re all promising something that they can’t deliver…namely, better times.

In Psalm 4, David says “Many people are saying, ‘Who will show us better times?’” That’s as true today as it was when David penned those words 3000 years ago. People are still looking for better times, safer times, happier times. But the better times won’t come simply by changing political ideologies or leaders (even though that would probably help). The good news…the REAL NEWS…is that we can find that kind of joy and security in Jesus Christ! He is the one who gives “greater joy” than we can find in success or affluence; he is the only one who can offer us real “peace and safety.”  That’s the good news.  Anyone else who says they can deliver those things is selling you something.

So give your vote to the candidate that you really believe represents your views best.  Vote for her/him because you are convinced they have the public’s best interest in mind and will do everything they can to govern and lead with integrity and wisdom. But in the end, know that there is only one candidate you can depend on to deliver on the promise of better times. He doesn’t have a news show or a website…but there is a really good book that was written about him! It’s called the Bible, and that candidate’s name is Jesus. He’s the answer…he’s the good news you’re looking for.

Do you want to know where you can find better times? Tune in to the real news. Stay thirsty for the Living Water Jesus is offering. Let His face smile upon you, and give you real peace.
